Leading a Team Changes Everything

You’ve probably seen an ad by Johnson and Johnson over the years with the slogan that “Having a baby changes everything.” When you have a child, everything does change – or at least it should. Your routines, your hobbies, your meals, your sleep schedules, heck even how you spend your money changes drastically! You change not because it’s convenient or easy but because it’s what’s best for the lives that have been entrusted to you.

The same can be said for leading a team.

Of course, the responsibilities of leading a team aren’t the same responsibilities that accompany raising children, but how you make decisions is similar.

  • You plan your time off around your team and their needs.
  • You plan your own production time around your need to be available to your team.
  • You plan for your teammates’ futures and support their growth and advancement.
  • You provide a safe place for your teammates to learn from their failures and protect them from being attacked.
  • You behave and react differently because your team is learning from your behavior.

Leaders, if you are going about your workday producing and making decisions the same way that you did before you were responsible for leading a team, you’re doing it wrong.

Leading a team should change everything about how you work, how you make decisions, and how you influence others. While your leadership position might afford you a really impressive title and a really great salary, what accompanies that position is a really heavy responsibility – the responsibility of stewarding the talents, growth, and careers of the people you lead.
