Who Are You?

“There are two kinds of people in the world – those who walk into a room and say, ‘There you are,’ and those who say, ‘Here I am.'” – Abigail Van Buren (a.k.a. Dear Abby)

As a charismatic person who finds a room full of people to be very energizing, I was really intrigued when I came across this quote! Let’s dissect these types of people Ms. Van Buren has highlighted:

The There You Are’s: These people don’t actively seek the spotlight. They focus their attention on others and demonstrate their humility by being with and for the people. This group doesn’t need a grand entrance; sneaking in quietly through the back door is fine with them.

The Here I Am’s: This group, on the other hand, enjoys being in the spotlight. Not all Here I Am’s are self-centered or arrogant, but the ones who are seek out attention, are self-important, and want to be served for their own benefit.

Do you know any “Here I Am” people? How do they make you feel when they walk in the room? Which one would people say you are? Are there any occasions where it’s appropriate to be a “Here I Am”?
